PARROTS ARE THE MOST ENDANGERED BIRDS ON EARTH
The Calgary Parrot Club (CPC) is a registered not-for-profit organization under the Societies Act, established June 24, 1988.
Objectives
- To educate parrot and bird guardians in the proper care and maintenance of companion parrots
- To be a guardian, not owner, and promote the Guardian Pledge
- To encourage adoption of unwanted parrots, rather than supporting coninued breeding and sale of surplus parrots
- To end the cyle of abuse, neglect and homelessness of parrots
- To promulgate information regarding the unsuitablility of parrots as companion animals for the general population, highlighting the unsuitability of caging wild animals, the substantial emotional and physical care parrots require, and the impact captivity has on an intelligent, sentient species
- To encourage a broader awareness of the relationship between the wild parrot trade, habitat destruction and the threat of specific parrot species extinction
- To promote the preservation of parrots in the wild and discourage smuggling of parrots
- To promote parrot rescue and rehabilitation through financial support of accredited legitimate parrot sanctuaries
- To provide camaraderie, education and friendship for members
- To hold regular meetings and publish a newsletter for the benefit of members
Given the potential lifespan of companion parrots are you willing to provide the rest of your life to care for a parrot? Realize they are loud, messy, destructive and demanding in time and nutritional requirements. Parrots also are expensive (pellets, fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, nut treats, endless need for bird safe toys to destroy, proper sized cage, medical expenses, etc.) Do you or a family member have allergies? Certain parrots are not suitable. We encourage those considering becoming a guardian to attend a meeting before they take the first step. A captive parrot will have 7 homes within the first 10 years of life (Mira Tweti).
