Although she has shared her entire life with animals of every type imaginable, Debbie has always had a special interest in parrots. After having budgies and cockatiels for many years, she began keeping larger parrots over a decade ago. Today, Debbie and her husband Bob share their home with eight parrots, including two Hyacinth Macaws. Whenever taking their birds out for walks, they were inevitably flooded with questions by members of the public. Children were especially keen to learn about the birds, and Debbie recognized the opportunity to create Bluebird Learning.

Drawing on her extensive background in education, as well as her experience as a volunteer at both the Toronto Zoo and Royal Ontario Museum, Debbie developed a series of grade-specific workshops for elementary school students that are tied directly into their science studies. From 2006 through 2009, Debbie and selected members of her flock travelled to schools throughout Toronto and the surrounding area, teaching over 7,500 children about parrots, nature and conservation. Now a professor at Humber College, Debbie is continuing her work in the field of parrot education as she presents to parrot clubs, seniors and youth groups. She is a member of numerous parrot organizations, and co-hosted “The Ten Things Your Parrot Wants You to Know” workshop in April 2009 in Barrie, Ontario, Canada.
